Lot 2986
TOKENS AND WEIGHTS, 4th-6th centuries. Host coin a maiorina of Constantius II, 337-361. Weight of 1 Solidus (Bronze, 20 mm, 4.28 g, 12 h), Nicomedia, 351-355. [D N CONSTAN]-TIVS P F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II to right. Rev. FEL TEMP REPARATIO / •SMNЄ Helmeted soldier to left, shield on left arm, spearing beardless fallen horseman who is turning his head back to right; in field to left, Γ. RIC 86. Edge serrated. Very minor deposits, otherwise, about very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The purpose of such serrated pieces is debated, however, their use as weights for solidi and semisses among the numerous evidently weight-standardized pieces of around 4 and 2 grams, respectively, is very likely.
